Have you ever had one of those days where you desperately want to get out of the house, but everything seems to unravel all at once? If not, do you want to swap lives for a few hours 😉 ? Today has DEFINITELY been one of those days! It started off brimming with cheery, optimistic potential (should we go to the library, the mall, or perhaps the zoo or Science Centre?) but somewhere during an hour time span, there was an unfortunate diaper malfunction, my toddler had managed to rub raspberry jam into his hair and clothes, and my three year old decided he just didn’t want to get dressed. Needless to say, the shininess of the day was rapidly fading and being replaced by a dull and gloomy cloud .

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I’m going to be honest. I used to think Valentine’s Day was a really lame, commercialized holiday, contrived for the sole purpose of buying overpriced flowers and making reservations at expensive and pretentious restaurants. Although I know consumerism is still the main reason why Valentine’s Day exists, I’m also aware that western society is basically built on buying frivolous things every day in order to make us ‘happy’ in a blasé way; so not liking Valentine’s Day because it’s a commercialized holiday isn’t a very solid excuse in my opinion. We live in an upside down world that seems to glorify violence and greed over love and kindness, which is why I have no problem participating in a day that celebrates what is truly important in life: family, love, friendship and kindness. I think we could ALL use some extra, over-the-top mushiness once in a while, don’t you? With this in mind,  I decided to do something special for my sweet, little valentines by injecting some excitement into our habitual morning routine.

Valentine’s Letter Hunt

The boys have played this letter hunt/ word building game multiple times during the past week. There’s just something about search-and-find games that kids love, and my boys are no exception! I chose to make this into a literacy game to help with M’s spelling and word recognition. B really liked this game too, and was a big ‘help’ in locating all of the little hearts.
