I love when my bugs get out the felt board to play on a rainy day. It makes for a great quiet-time activity, and it keeps them occupied for a good twenty minutes. I especially like felt board activities because it encourages hand-eye coordination, fine-motor development, problem solving and spatial awareness (by experimenting with how the felt pieces fit together to form a complete picture), and story telling.

This rainbow carnations experiment was a great visual way to teach my bugs how water travels up through the stems of flowers and plants. We actually conducted this experiment back in March, when the boys were learning about rainbows, which is why you may notice that some of the pictures have SNOW in the background!

The boys made these lovely Kandinsky inspired concentric circle paintings back in April. After reading Marcus Pfister’s Henri, the Egg Artiste, I wanted to teach my bugs about some of the famous artists presented in the picture book. We took a closer look at some of Kandinsky, Haring, and Matisse’s work on the internet. During our exploration, we came across this fun, Kandinsky Inspired, preschool art tutorial. It seemed simple enough for both of my bugs to execute with little help, and the end result is stunning! We altered our paintings slightly by using watercolours for the background, rather than tempera paint.

Mother’s Day is this Sunday; although flowers make a lovely gift, why not give mom what she really wants? Wine/ cocktails and chocolate! I took the traditional flower theme of Mother’s Day and gave it a modern twist by disguising the premixed cocktail bottles as radiant sunflowers…. sneaky right?
