Have you read any books by Rebecca and Ed Emberley? Chances are, you have. They are a father daughter team who have created some pretty fantastic books. Their surprise twists on old classics, as well as their unique artwork, set their books apart. My kids really enjoyed the book Go Away, Big Green Monster! so I made some feltboard pieces for them to retell the story, which you can check out here. We recently read and acted out the book If You’re A Monster And You Know It ; it was a hit with my five and two-year-old. Like most of the Emberley books, the illustrations consist of vibrant paper die-cuts, which were the inspiration behind this project!

B and I had a fun time creating these Heartbreaker Treat Pouches. They make a cute Valentine’s Day gift, and B was able to practise his fine motor skills by weaving ribbon through the holes of the heart pouches.

Spaghetti painting is the perfect art activity for a rainy May long weekend, and it’s even more fun when you pretend the spaghetti are wriggly worms :). This activity is also great for strengthening those fine-motor muscles in your little ones’ hands.

A few days ago I create a Halloween sensory bin for my bugs using playdough as the star component. I followed the playdough recipe from here, and added some orange and mint scent to the orange and green playdough for an extra sensory element. I really like the texture this playdough recipe produces, and it lasts quite a long time if you keep it in an airtight container. I like to wrap mine in plastic wrap and then seal it inside of a ziplock bag.

I love when my bugs get out the felt board to play on a rainy day. It makes for a great quiet-time activity, and it keeps them occupied for a good twenty minutes. I especially like felt board activities because it encourages hand-eye coordination, fine-motor development, problem solving and spatial awareness (by experimenting with how the felt pieces fit together to form a complete picture), and story telling.

Thanks to this year’s winter Olympics being held in Sochi, my bugs have been interested in learning more about Russia. It all started one morning when M asked me casually, “mommy, can we drive to Russia today?” which led me to show him where Russia is located in relation to us on the world map. When I pointed out that our countries are separated by an ocean and therefore we’d have to fly on a plane to get there, he responded by saying,”No, we could drive there if we had a submarine car.” Haha! Kids say the most witty and unexpected things sometimes!
