A few days ago I create a Halloween sensory bin for my bugs using playdough as the star component. I followed the playdough recipe from here, and added some orange and mint scent to the orange and green playdough for an extra sensory element. I really like the texture this playdough recipe produces, and it lasts quite a long time if you keep it in an airtight container. I like to wrap mine in plastic wrap and then seal it inside of a ziplock bag.

Halloween Playdough Sensory Bin

For my bugs’ sensory bin we used:

  • scented green, orange and purple playdough- click here for a great playdough recipe
  • a variety of mini pumpkins and gourds  (we used the bumpy, warty gourds to make impressions in the dough)
  • pipe cleaners
  • googly eyes
  • craft leaves (to make leaf vein impressions)
  • coffee beans
  • Halloween cookie cutters
  • scissors

The boys and I had a great morning exploring and creating with the scented Halloween playdough! This not only makes for a fun sensory experience, but it also helps strengthen those tiny muscles in the hands to improve fine-motor skills needed for a variety of everyday tasks such as writing!

The boys squished, kneaded, and formed the playdough into a variety of ghoulish monsters, jack-o-lanterns, witches and spiders!
