My baby B is not so much a baby anymore; this past weekend we celebrated his 2nd birthday! It’s surreal how one day I was rocking him to sleep, inhaling that sweet, intoxicating baby scent emanating from the top of his head, and the next day I’m moving him into his “big boy” bed… *sigh*. I am so fortunate to have been given the gift of time with my boys, although, I’ll admit, some days I am more thankful than others. Whenever I find myself wishing for a certain annoying/ challenging phase to pass, I’m reminded of what my grandpa M used to say, “quit wishing your life away. It goes by too fast as it is.” It’s not until I had my boys that I realized how clearly his words ring true. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t wish to relive potty training with M, or to continuously mop up the copious amount of food B intentionally flings onto the floor in fits of defiance, but what I do wish for is patience, and the foresight to know that all of these challenging moments, along with the countless great ones, will soon be woven into the past, forming a tapestry of blurred, happy memories. In other words, I’m learning to embrace and relish in all the good moments, while stopping to do some deep breathing when submerged in the not-to-so-good ones :).

When my sister first told me she had invited around twenty kids to A’s 6th B-day party, I thought for sure she had lost her mind! Twenty kids? Not to mention it was a drop-off-stay-if-you-like party! How was she possibly going to entertain twenty kids for two hours? Then I remembered she’s a teacher; She has to keep more kids than that engaged in curriculum-based instruction, cooped up in a classroom most of the day, for approximately thirty hours a week… she was going to be fine.

My sweet little nephew, O, turned 4 this month! O and my son M are only 7 months apart, so they are each other’s best friends and, at times, also a thorn in one another’s side! But one thing is for sure, M is ALWAYS ecstatic to see his cousin O; and when you combine the joy of playing with one of your favourite people, with the thrill of a birthday party (plus the added allure of birthday cupcakes), you get one charged up three year old! The only downside to this is I regrettably told M we were going to O’s party the night before, which means he was too riled up in anticipation of all the fun he was going to have the next day to actually do any sleeping :(. Needless to say, he didn’t last long before completely falling apart! Oh well, O’s BUGTASTIC birthday party was still a HUGE hit, full of creative food and activities that kept the guests (big and small) BUZZING with excitement!

I was inspired to have a Barnyard theme for B’s 1st birthday after my husband and I purchased the wooden Fold & Go Barn from Melissa and Doug as B’s birthday present.
