The boys and I attempted to make our own pysanky inspired Easter eggs after reading Patricia Polacco’s picture book Rechenka’s Eggs. It is similar to the crayon resist method, only you wipe the wax off once you have achieved the desired design and colours. Instead of using wax crayons we made our designs with oil pastels, which worked out really well.
Easy Peasy Pysanky
If you want the white of the egg to be part of your design, draw on your egg first, using one of the pastels (it doesn’t matter what colour you use, because you will be wiping it off at the end). If you do not want any white, choose a colour to dye your egg (starting with the lightest colour first) and then draw/colour in part of your design in order to keep that colour before placing your egg in a new dye colour.
Continue colouring in parts of your design, with an oil pastel, in order to keep the existing dye colour, before placing your egg in another dye colour.
When you have completed your design and finished dying your egg, you can wipe the oil pastel off for the big reveal!
