Spaghetti painting is the perfect art activity for a rainy May long weekend, and it’s even more fun when you pretend the spaghetti are wriggly worms :). This activity is also great for strengthening those fine-motor muscles in your little ones’ hands.
Materials
- Cooked Spaghetti
- Tempera Paint (we used primary colours so we could also experiment with colour mixing)
- Cups or Containers for Paint and Spaghetti
- Paper
- Newspaper (to protect your work surface)
- Children’s Chopsticks (If you don’t have kid-friendly chopsticks you can use tongs, tweezers, or you can make your own by following the directions in the video below.)
Spaghetti Worm Painting
Start by adding a few ‘worms’ to each cup/ container, along with a good squirt of tempera paint. Then give each kiddo a chopstick and some paper, and let them explore!
M couldn’t resist getting his hands in there too! It makes for a very cool sensory experience.
As you can see, the boys mixed the primary colours to make new colours…
The spaghetti worm paintings had a very Jackson Pollock inspired look!
Literacy and Science Connections
We read the book Diary of Worm, by Doreen Cronin, and we also read along with some e-books about worms on BookFlix. Later today we’re going to head outside to go on an earthworm hunt so we can observe them up close.
