My sweet little nephew, O, turned 4 this month! O and my son M are only 7 months apart, so they are each other’s best friends and, at times, also a thorn in one another’s side! But one thing is for sure, M is ALWAYS ecstatic to see his cousin O; and when you combine the joy of playing with one of your favourite people, with the thrill of a birthday party (plus the added allure of birthday cupcakes), you get one charged up three year old! The only downside to this is I regrettably told M we were going to O’s party the night before, which means he was too riled up in anticipation of all the fun he was going to have the next day to actually do any sleeping :(. Needless to say, he didn’t last long before completely falling apart! Oh well, O’s BUGTASTIC birthday party was still a HUGE hit, full of creative food and activities that kept the guests (big and small) BUZZING with excitement!
Decorating Bug Catchers
When we first arrived, my sister (O’s mom), immediately directed us to the table where the boys could decorate their own bug-catcher jars with bug and letter stickers, and fake grass.
O’s mom even cut out little bugs from her cricut machine for the kids to assemble and stick on their bug jars.
Bug Hunt!
When all of the kids had finished decorating their bug-catchers, it was time for the big bug hunt! O’s mom gave each child a sheet with pictures of the bugs they needed to collect for their jars. Each bug collecting sheet was different, so the kids had to make sure that the bugs they found also matched one of the bugs on their sheet.
The kids had so much fun scurrying around the house collecting all of their bugs!
Pin the Legs on the Spider
A creepy, crawly twist on the classic game, Pin the Legs on the Spider was a big hit amongst the kids!
Creative Critter Food!
O’s mom and dad had some delicious grub (pun intended) spread out for the hungry guests to devour:
- snail shells (tortillas with PB&J rolled and cut into little pinwheels)
- critter mix (a mixture of chips and pretzels)
- spider sacs (Cheesy Poofs)
- ants on a log (celery, with either PB or cheese spread, dotted with raisins)
- caterpillar Kabobs (a variety of melon balls threaded through a skewer)
- worms in dirt (chocolate pudding, cookie crumbs, and gummy worms)
- bug juice (Blueberry Cranberry Cocktail, Lemonade, and Seven-Up + frozen blueberries set in ice-cubes for the bugs)
Bug-Cakes!
Dragonfly and spider cupcakes… cute and delicious!
The dragonflies were made using pretzels for wings, a Smartie for the head, and three jellybeans for the body. The Spiders were made using an Oreo cookie for the body, 2 Smarties for the eyes, and licorice string for the legs.
Everyone had a great time at O’s FANTASTIC BUGTASTIC BIRTHDAY, including the birthday boy!
