I was munching on some conversation heart candies when I suddenly became inspired to make this edible V-Day centrepiece.
To make it I used:
- Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix (or your favourite sugar cookie dough)
- Candy sticks
- Ribbon
- V-Day decorative tape (optional)
- Cinnamon Hearts (or you could use conversation heart candies)
- Red Food Colouring
- A small glass jar
- FoodWriters (or you could just use a fine tipped paint brush and food colouring)
- Heart shaped cookie cutter (missing from photo)
I made the sugar cookies according to the package (make sure to follow the directions for making the cut-out cookies, rather than the regular spoon-drop cookies). Then I separated the dough into 4 bowls and added a different colour of food colouring to each one; I left the last bowl of cookie dough plain so my bugs could decorate those cookies however they wanted. I rolled out the dough and had M help me cut out the heart shapes using the cookie cutter. Before inserting the candy sticks into the base of the hearts, I dipped the end of each stick in egg whites to help secure them in place. Then we baked them according to the package directions.
When they were finished baking, and had cooled, I got out my FoodWriter pens and transformed these regular heart cookies into conversation heart cookies.
I wrapped a piece of V-Day decorative tape (purchased from Superstore) around the rim of a small jar and had M pour in some cinnamon hearts. Then I added a few of the conversion heart cookie pops and tied ribbon around the base of each of the hearts.
I think our V-Day centrepiece turned out quite sweet 😉
I had promised the boys they could decorate their own cookies after eating dinner. I put some pink icing into a squeeze bottle, and gave each of them a cookie and some candies.
Cookies before bed was not my best idea, but after a few laps around the kitchen, we were all ready for bed 🙂
Happy heart month!
