My bugs made these sweet thumbprint heart vases for their nana and I. They are incredibly simple to make and they look lovely, whether displaying fresh cut flowers or a candy bouquet.

Materials:

  • a vase (I purchased rectangular vases from the dollar store)
  • glass craft paint (we used Martha Stewart’s Mulit-Surface Pearl Acrylic Craft Paint , which worked well and are supposed to be top-rack dishwasher safe once cured. Martha Stewart also has a line of glass/ceramic paints  as well).
  • little assistants willing to make thumbprint hearts for you
  • something to fill the vase with: flowers, cookies, candy

DIY Thumbprint Heart Vase

This was a very simple project to make. I squirted some of the craft paint onto a paper plate and had my boys (one at a time, and with different paint colours) dip their thumb into the paint and stamp it directly onto the vase on an angle, and then again, overlapping the first thumbprint on the opposite angle, to create a heart shape.

Once all the thumbprint hearts were made, I placed the vases into a cold oven and set the temperature for 350°, baking the vases for 30 minutes. When the timer went off, I turned off the oven and left the vases inside to cool gradually. If you take your vases out too soon, the glass will most likely crack and break. It is recommended you wait 72 hrs before using your projects after curing. If you are using glitter paints, or you would like to air-dry your project, the paint needs to cure for 21 days (see more information on Martha Stewart Craft Paints here).

Once your paint has been cured, you are ready to gift them!
