The boys received this bag of textured, foam building blocks last Christmas. It may not look it, but this bag holds a surprising amount of blocks.

Rather than build with them, my bugs love to dump them ALL out and then run through them, scattering them throughout the house! I was growing tired of constantly finding these small blocks in random places, so I packed them up and set them out of sight for a while… until today. M and B’s cousin was over and the boys wanted to do a painting project. I immediately thought of the foam blocks; their different textures and shapes would make them perfect for stamping!

I dumped a few of the blocks onto a tray, and gave each boy a piece of paper and their own plate of paint to dunk the blocks in.

The boys enjoyed seeing the different patterns and shapes from the textured blocks emerge onto their papers. They also discovered that the less paint they had on their blocks, the more visible the patterns were.

B did more of a rubbing technique, which produced a different effect, but the variety of textures and patterns are still evident.

Here are just a couple of the finished paintings. I think they turned out pretty cool, and all of the boys enjoyed making them.

And that’s how I kept my bugs (+ 1) busy today :).
