I’ve been wanting to try this art project with my bugs for a while and, since today is the 1st of February, I figured why not make it into a Valentine’s Day craft?

I got out some white scrapbooking paper, our homemade watercolours, a cup of water, paintbrushes, white glue, and table salt. I drew a few heart shapes with white glue on the paper, then doused the shapes in table salt, shaking the excess onto a plate to reuse.

I demonstrated to M how to saturate his brush with water, and then dip it in a colour, before touching the brush tip very lightly to the salted shape. When the watercolour makes contact with the salt, it spreads along the heart. It’s important to keep your brush dripping wet (you could also water down your colours ahead of time to make it slightly easier, or use store bought liquid watercolours ).

Being that M is used to painting by moving his paintbrush back and forth, it was a REAL challenge for him to remember to just gently touch the salted shapes. The colours still bled along the lines, but they didn’t travel as far as they normally would have.

I felt bad being so nitpicky with M about his technique, so I let him have free artistic reign the second time around.

B got in on the action too!

I made B’s design for him, and kept loading up his brush with new colours for him to experiment with

The texture of the salt and glue proved to be pretty intriguing for little B

I think the boys’ paintings turned out pretty great! They dried shimmery from the salt, and I really love the texture of both paintings.

I found some Valentine themed craft tape at Superstore and decided to use it as a border for the finished paintings.

We used the craft tape for another art activity today as well. Click here to see it!
