A Christmas without glitter is like a birthday without cake; it just doesn’t seem right! We have a lot of sparkly ornaments on our tree and entwined in the garland on our banister, but the mantel definitely needed to be bedazzled as well. I wanted to do something that was simple, cheap, and enjoyable for M (and really, how could it not be fun when a ridiculous amount of glitter is involved?)
We created this project using 2 foam boards, a leftover canvas I had previously painted silver/white, white glue, buttons, and red and silver glitter (to go along with our colour scheme). You could just use glitter glue pens and all foam boards (they are really cheap) if you wanted to.
First, I gave M a bottle of white glue and a foam board and told him to squirt the glue all over it to create a design. This turned out to be a really good fine-motor activity for him!
Then he sprinkled some silver and red glitter over his glue masterpiece:
We let it set for a few minutes before tapping off the excess glitter into a bowl to be reused.

While we were waiting for our glitter pictures to dry, I suddenly remembered I had an extra canvas sitting in the basement which I had already painted silver/white for a previous project but ended up not using. I made a very quick spiral tree design on the canvas with the white glue, then we sprinkled the silver and red glitter on top. Once the excess glitter had been discarded, M started pressing colourful buttons onto the still-wet glitter/glue as ornaments for our sparkling tree. He even add a few yellow buttons at the top to resemble a star.
This project was really cheap and easy to do, and I think it added the perfect amount of shimmer to our mantel 🙂
