M found Bob, our Elf on the Shelf, stuck inside our popcorn machine this morning!
This was enough to inspire the follow letter P activities:
Rainbow Letters
The first thing we did was brainstorm some words that start with the letter P. Then M practiced printing the letter P by making it into a rainbow letter.
I printed the letter P in black onto a piece of paper, then gave M some of my Mr. Sketch markers to trace over the original. He was pretty shaky at first but, with each new colour, he got progressively better.
Painting with Popcorn
Then M made a winter themed picture by gluing on some foam Christmas shapes I found at the dollar store, and adding white popcorn paint prints for snowflakes.
Making Words
I love Bob Books, and so does M. I pulled one of the books that focuses on the letter P and read it aloud to M. Then I printed some letters onto coloured paper (I printed the letter P onto a different colour than the other letters) and had M build simple words from the Bob book, Pip and Pog, page by page, by stretching out the words and saying each letter sound.
M is really good at making letter sounds, but we are working on putting these sounds together, by stretching out small words, in order to read simple three letter words.
Tactile Letter P
Lastly, M glued pieces of popcorn onto a large letter P. This letter will be added to his tactile alphabet for his wordwall. He alternated between eating and sticking, of course!
And that’s how I kept my oldest bug busy learning with the letter P!
