Exploring Fall Colours

Exploring Fall Colours

Fall is such a beautiful time of year: the crisp, cool air; pumpkins swelling on serpentine vines; the moon, luminous and full; and, of course, the patchwork of colourful leaves blanketing the ground. leaf-art-2Yes, fall is definitely my favourite time of year! I’m pretty sure my bugs love it too, judging by how many times we had to stop on our way home from the bus stop in order to inspect and collect leaves. When we got home, my bugs didn’t want to part with their leaf collections, so we brought them inside and put them in a bowl on the table.

The next day I read the books Leaf Man, and Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf, by Lois Ehlert aloud to them. I displayed the books on the table, along with the leaves they had collected, and set out some other fall inspired materials as well. I didn’t give my bugs any instructions, I just invited them to explore and create. The result? Lots of lovely and unique artwork, some discoveries in colour mixing and matching, and an hour filled with inquiring minds and busy hands.

A few days ago I create a Halloween sensory bin for my bugs using playdough as the star component. I followed the playdough recipe from here, and added some orange and mint scent to the orange and green playdough for an extra sensory element. I really like the texture this playdough recipe produces, and it lasts quite a long time if you keep it in an airtight container. I like to wrap mine in plastic wrap and then seal it inside of a ziplock bag.

Felt Monsters

Felt Monsters

I’ve been meaning to make a felt board for my bugs for a while now, and finally got around to assembling one the other day. I made our felt board simply by stapling a sheet of black felt to a foam board. In the spirit of Halloween, I thought it would be fun for the boys to be able to create their own silly monsters. This activity is cheap, easy to make, and a lifesaver for when you are in dire need of some quiet time. When I’m making dinner, and tempers are on the brink of boiling over, I pull out the felt board and monster pieces, and my bugs are settled and engaged for at least 20 minutes. I will definitely be making more felt activities to go along with our felt board!

Kool-Aid Play Dough: Monster Gifts

M and I made these cute Kool-Aid Play Dough Monsters, as gifts for his friends at preschool, to help celebrate him turning 4! Usually his teachers advise against bringing in treats (due to allergies, etc.) so I thought it would be fun to mix up some Kool-Aid Play Dough for each of his classmates, and package them up as silly monsters.
