Pokémon: DIY Pokéballs

Pokémon: DIY Pokéballs

Have you, or your kids, joined in on the Pokémon Go! craze?! If you are skeptical, I can tell you first hand how fun and interactive it is to play as a family. My kids are super excited to run errands with me, and to explore new places around our city. It’s a great way to get some exercise, while also reaping the benefits of being outside by soaking up vitamin D and enjoying the fresh air.

Last week, we were hit with some pretty persistent thunderstorms, so we were pretty much confined to being indoors. Being stuck inside with three active kids, ranging in ages 2-6, can get pretty hairy, so it’s always good to have some tricks up your sleeve! I figured since they were so into Pokémon right now, they would really enjoy creating their own Pokéballs; luckily I was right. Not only did they have a fun time creating them, but they’ve also incorporated them into their daily imaginative play as well.             DIY Pokeballs 17

These DIY Pokéballs are cheap and easy to make; they would be perfect for a Pokémon theme party, accessories for a Pokémon trainer Hallowe’en costume, or for every day pretend play.

Here’s how to make some Pokéballs of your own!

As busy as we may feel, my bugs and I have embraced the arrival of spring and all of the beauty that comes with it: trees and flowers budding and beginning to bloom; plump robins hopping around the yard; sweater weather; bike riding; puddle jumping; and the fresh, earthy scent after a thunder shower.

A few weeks ago I was watching some finches flitting from branch to branch, when I suddenly had the desire to create something with my bugs. When I mentioned the idea of making bird pillows to M, he had an even better plan: Angry Birds pillows!

Spring Themed Felt Board

Spring Themed Felt Board

I love when my bugs get out the felt board to play on a rainy day. It makes for a great quiet-time activity, and it keeps them occupied for a good twenty minutes. I especially like felt board activities because it encourages hand-eye coordination, fine-motor development, problem solving and spatial awareness (by experimenting with how the felt pieces fit together to form a complete picture), and story telling.

Ever since I introduced M to the story of The Gingerbread Man last winter, he has listened to it over and over on his iPad, retold the story in his own words, and recited it by memory to his little brother B. This year, I decided to create some felt board characters for M and B to retell and act out the story of The Gingerbread Man with. The felt characters turned out to be a real hit!
