The boys wanted to send a special Valentine’s message to their cousins and grandparents, so I taught them how to make heart envelopes. Heart envelopes are great because the message doubles as an envelope; when the recipient unfolds the envelope a wonderful heart-shaped message is revealed. Fun, right?

Creating Heart Messages

We started by cutting out a heart shape from a sheet of square craft paper.

Next, the boys wrote a message onto the heart-shaped paper. I told them to write something they like/love about each person they were sending the messages to. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to teach kids about letter writing. M wrote out his entire messages, making sure to include a salutation (To:) and a closing (Love/From:). I scribed B’s messages for him and he was able to practise printing his name on each one.

Mailing Letters

Valentine’s Day is also a great opportunity for children to learn about the postal system. I showed my bugs how to address an envelope, and why/how we use stamps. Then we went for a short walk to the mailbox to mail the letters.

My boys were so excited about their letters, they couldn’t keep quiet for long. As soon as they saw their Nana and Papa, the secret burst from their lips! Haha!
